Under the Alternate Work Practice (AWP), components are surveyed with an OGI camera on a short, regular cycle, and monitored once a year with Method 21 (M21) in a fixed window. In Chateau this is set up with one AWP frequency on the rule, plus a work schedule assignment that says which window each unit's annual M21 falls in.
This article covers both. For how the surveys themselves are recorded, see AWP Area Surveys: Overview.
The AWP frequencies
| Frequency | Shown in grids as | OGI | Annual M21 | A year |
| AWP Bi Monthly | AWP BM | One OGI survey in every 2-month period | In one 2-month period, the M21 window | 5 OGI + 1 M21 |
| AWP Monthly | AWP M | One OGI survey every month | In one month, the M21 window | 11 OGI + 1 M21 |
The M21 takes the place of the OGI survey in its window. Chateau doesn't schedule an OGI survey for the period that holds the M21.
What satisfies each period
- An OGI survey in the period satisfies that period.
- An M21 in the period also satisfies it, as long as M21 satisfies an OGI period is ticked on the rule (it is by default). This only applies to the AWP requirements.
- The annual M21 must be done inside its window. An M21 done outside the window satisfies only the OGI period it falls in. The annual M21 is still due.
- An OGI survey never satisfies the annual M21.
If the annual M21 isn't done by the end of its window, it shows as a missed inspection on Missed Inspections Scheduled by Rules.
Setting up a rule with an AWP frequency
- Go to Rules › Manage Rule Specs and select the rule.
- Open the M21 Frequency section.
- Click Add new row, or Edit an existing row. Set the component type and physical state as usual, and choose AWP Bi Monthly or AWP Monthly as the Frequency.
- Save.
Once the rule has an AWP row:
- M21 satisfies an OGI period appears above the grid, ticked. Leave it ticked unless an M21 shouldn't count for the OGI period it's done in.
- The OGI Frequency section shows the matching OGI row as read-only (for example Bi Monthly — from the AWP frequency). You change it from the M21 row.
- How this frequency works, below the grid, shows the periods the frequency creates over a year and where the M21 goes. The window shown is only an example. The real window is set in Assign Work Schedule.
Things to know:
- AWP frequencies are offered only in the M21 Frequency section, and can't be used on a DTM.
- Min. Days Between still works. It can't be longer than the cycle (under 59 days for AWP Bi Monthly, under 28 for AWP Monthly).
- As with any frequency, the most specific matching row wins. Exemptions still apply.
The M21 window: Assign Work Schedule
Every AWP component needs an M21 window: the 2-month period (AWP Bi Monthly) or month (AWP Monthly) its annual M21 is done in. Windows are set per group of components in Rules › Assign Work Schedule.
The AWP default assignment
When you save an AWP frequency on a rule and then assign the rule, Chateau creates an assignment named AWP default — AWP Bi Monthly (or AWP Monthly), if there isn't one already. It covers the components on that rule and puts the M21 in the last window of the year (Nov–Dec, or December). The rule screen shows a link to open it.
Open it and set the window your site actually uses. If different units use different windows, first edit the default's Component query so it no longer covers those units, then give each unit its own assignment (below). A unit's own assignment that still overlaps the default conflicts with it, like any two assignments, and isn't saved.
Creating an assignment
- In Rules › Assign Work Schedule, click + New assignment.
- Enter an Assignment name, for example B72 — AWP Method 21 in Jul–Aug.
- Under Scope — Inspection Type, select M21 and OGI.
- Build the Component query, usually by LUnit. The badge shows how many components match.
- Under Preferred timing — per frequency, fill in the AWP row:
- M21 window (required): the 2-month period (Jan–Feb … Nov–Dec) or the month (January … December). The window is binding: the annual M21 is due inside it.
- Month within the window (AWP Bi Monthly only, optional): 1st Month or 2nd Month, if you'd like the M21 early or late in the window. This is a preference, not a requirement.
- OGI (AWP Bi Monthly): 1st Month or 2nd Month, the month in each 2-month period that the OGI survey is released in.
- Click Save assignment. It takes effect the next time rules run.
Each assignment then shows as a card with its components and its timing.
An assignment can also hold preferred timing for the rule's other frequencies, such as Annual, through + Add frequency. That timing is a preference only. See the work schedule article for assignments outside AWP.
Conflicts
A component can only have one M21 window. If you save an assignment that would give components a different window, or a different OGI month, than another assignment already does, it isn't saved. The message names the other assignment and the units and components involved. Change the query of one of the assignments so they no longer overlap, and save again.
Differing only on the optional month within the window isn't a conflict.
Conflicts can also come from outside Assign Work Schedule, for example a component edit or an approved MOC that moves a component into a second assignment. Chateau then warns Work schedule conflict, and the component isn't scheduled until it's resolved. Conflicts are listed on the Work Schedule Conflicts audit.
Components with no assignment
There's no fallback window. A component with an AWP frequency that isn't covered by a work schedule assignment isn't scheduled: Chateau creates neither its OGI surveys nor its annual M21. The same goes for a component caught in a conflict. This can happen, for example, when a unit's own assignment is deleted and the default no longer covers that unit.
Make sure every AWP component is covered by exactly one assignment. The AWP work schedule assignment audit lists AWP components that aren't.
Changing a window
- Moved before this year's window opens: this year's M21 moves to the new window.
- Moved after this year's M21 was done: nothing more is due this year.
- Moved after this year's window was missed: the miss stands, and the new window applies from next year.
Where to see it
On the Components grid, an AWP component shows AWP BM or AWP M as its frequency. Its window and OGI month show in the M21 Work Schedule and OGI Work Schedule columns. These columns are hidden by default: add them from the column chooser. The same appears on the component's Tag page.
On the Schedule, requests show the underlying frequencies: Annual for the M21, and Bi Monthly or Monthly for the OGI surveys.
