An area survey is the new way to record an Alternate Work Practice (AWP) survey in Chateau. The survey covers the components on a tour. The technician walks those components with an OGI camera and records only the exceptions: leaks, and any components they couldn't monitor or didn't get to. When the technician completes the survey, Chateau records a passing OGI inspection for every other component on the tour.
Area surveys replace the milestone method, where the technician recorded milestone inspections along a route and Chateau created path inspections for the components between them. Both methods are available for a short transition period. See Alternate Work Practice (AWP): Overview and Terms for how the two compare.
How an area survey works
- The survey is the tour. The office builds a tour for each survey. The tour's components are the survey's components. Group them however suits the facility: by area, unit, REN, or any other property. A tour per area, such as West Area Survey, is just one example. There is no route sequence to set up or maintain.
- The technician starts the survey on the tour. In Chateau Mobile they open the tour, tap Start Survey, and walk the tour's components with the camera.
- Only exceptions are recorded. During the walk the technician records leaks, and marks any component they couldn't monitor or didn't get to. They do not tap through every component.
- Completing the survey writes the results. Chateau shows a summary of what it will record. Once the technician confirms, it creates a passing OGI inspection for every remaining component.
- The survey is kept as a record. After check-in the survey appears in Chateau under OGI › Surveys. It shows its start and end times, technician, camera serial, sensitivity check, inspections, leaks, survey video and the technician's GPS track.
What Chateau records when a survey is completed
| Component outcome in the survey | What Chateau records |
|---|---|
| Nothing recorded against it | A passing OGI inspection, linked to the survey |
| Record Leak | A failing OGI inspection and leak, at the time it was recorded, linked to the survey |
| Couldn't Monitor… | A Did Not Monitor record with the reason the technician picked. The component stays due. |
| Leave for Later | Nothing. The component is not part of this survey and stays due. |
Couldn't Monitor… or Leave for Later?
- Couldn't Monitor… is for a component the technician had a legitimate reason not to monitor: it's out of service, purged, barricaded, unsafe to reach, and so on. The reason is recorded so the office can correct the component in the database, or account for it in reports.
- Leave for Later is for a component there's nothing wrong with. The technician just didn't get to it, for example because they were called out of the unit or ran out of time. Nothing is recorded. The component stays due for a later survey.
Passing inspections are time-stamped at the midpoint of the survey, between its start and its completion. Leaks keep the time they were recorded.
If the tour isn't finished in one go, the technician can complete the survey with some components left for later, then start a new survey on the same tour for the components still due. Each survey keeps its own start time, video and inspections.
Survey video
The survey video is the record that shows the tour's components were surveyed, including the ones with no leaks. How it gets into Chateau depends on the camera:
| Camera | How the survey video is captured |
|---|---|
| A camera connected to Chateau Mobile with Stream (FLIR Gx320, Gx620, GF77; Opgal EyeCGas) | Recorded on the handheld from the camera's live view. It uploads at check-in. |
| A camera connected with Media Transfer (Opgal EyeCGas, ChampionX AURA) | Recorded on the camera, then attached to the survey from the camera's files in Chateau Mobile |
| Any other camera, or no camera connected | Recorded on the camera. The technician notes the file names in the survey comment, and the office uploads the video to the survey in Chateau. |
Without a connected camera, the photos and videos of individual leaks also go into Chateau afterwards. The technician can tap Tag Photo / Tag Video on the leak in Chateau Mobile, so the files are matched by OGI › Import. Or the office can upload each file to its inspection with Upload Image / Upload Video. See OGI Picture and Video Import and Manually Uploading OGI Pictures and Videos to Individual OGI Inspections.
See Connecting a Wireless OGI Camera to Chateau Mobile for the supported cameras.
Setting up
Facility settings
OGI Settings › Testing Protocol must be set to AWP. See Setting Up AWP.
Settings › Field Events › Did Not Monitor must be turned on for technicians to use Couldn't Monitor…. Setting the Testing Protocol to AWP turns it on automatically. If you don't want technicians using Couldn't Monitor…, turn it back off after switching to AWP. Facilities that switched to AWP before area surveys were released should check the setting.
Settings reach Chateau Mobile at check-out. A technician who checked out before a setting was changed needs to check in and check out again.
Building the survey tours
Each survey covers one tour, so build a tour for each set of components a technician will survey together. The example below groups components by Area, but any column works: unit, REN, or whatever matches how the facility is walked.
The Start Survey button only appears on a tour made up entirely of OGI inspections. A tour that also contains M21, AVO or cooling tower inspections cannot be surveyed.
- Open Components and group the grid by the column you want, for example LUnit or Area. To do that, drag the column header into the Drag here to set row groups bar.
- Tick the box on a group row to select all of its components.
- Click Add To Tour.
- In Add components to tour, choose Build new tour, give it a name such as North Area Survey, and set Inspection Why to OGI with the OGI frequency.
- Choose who the tour is assigned to and its due date, then click Build Tour.
- Repeat for each group.
