We’re upgrading the phx42’s Bluetooth module from Serial Port Profile (SPP) to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to enhance performance and compatibility. Here’s why we’re making this change, and its impact on legacy devices, such as older Windows Mobile handhelds.
The Serial Number for these upgraded units will contain the letters BLE at the end.
- Example: phx42-1234-BLE
Why Switch to BLE?
-
Power Efficiency: BLE consumes less power, extending phx42’s battery life for field use.
-
Modern Compatibility: BLE connects seamlessly with iOS, Android, and Windows 10/11 devices.
-
Future-Proofing: BLE (Bluetooth 4.0+) supports advanced features like improved range and security, ensuring phx42’s relevance.
-
Security: BLE offers robust encryption, enhancing data protection.
Impact on Legacy Devices
BLE is not compatible with Bluetooth Classic’s SPP, affecting older devices like:
-
Windows Mobile Handhelds: Devices running Windows Mobile 5.0/6 use Bluetooth 2.0/2.1 and lack BLE support.
-
Other Devices: Older Android (~pre-4.3), Windows XP/7 PCs.
Legacy devices cannot connect to the BLE-based phx42.
